The Sierra Traditional Jazz Club
The Sierra Traditional Jazz Club (briefly called the Sierra Jazz Club) was formed
in early 1973 as a support for the local Celebrated Jazzberry Jam band, led by
Lueder Ohlwein. In 1976, he organized a new band. His original musicians
regrouped as the High Sierra Jazz Band and the club immediately adopted them as their house band. And still is !!
Our bylaws state that we exist "to encourage, perpetuate and preserve the
appreciation of traditional jazz music". We do this by having monthly concerts,
printing a monthly news letter, called "Jazzomania", putting on an annual festival called "Jazzaffair", and giving worthy students scholarships to jazz camps and to schools of higher education.
The club meets with a concert on the second Saturday of each month at 7:00
p.m. in the Memorial Building in Three Rivers CA. Each meeting features the
music of a traditional Dixieland band. Our Jazzaffair, which has been going on for almost 35 years is held the second weekend of each April and features up to
10 exceptional trad jazz bands from all over the U.S. We select the bands with
great care.
Club membership, which allows free admittance to all of the monthly concerts,
receipt of the news letter and a discount for the annual Jazzaffair, costs only
$50 per person or $80 per couple per year. Students under 18 years of age can join for $10 per year. One can receive the news letter as a non-member for $15 per year. Admission to the monthly concerts for non-members is $10 per person. Admission for students under 18 years of age is $5.00.
